Heard a mention of this story today on the radio, and had to look it up online and read the whole thing. It seems that some well meaning, but ultimately clueless, citizens in England tried to rescue a "distressed owl" for several hours before discovering that it was fake. They even called in the RSPCA and the local Fire/Rescue folks.
I mean seriously, it doesn't even look like a real owl for Pete's Sake:
When asked about the scale of the blunder, the RSPCA spokeswoman was not at all apologetic about the waste of manpower, resources, or taxpayer money on such an obvious waste of time:
"Spokeswoman Klare Kennett said: 'It is not the first time we have been called to rescue an animal that isn't real but we'd rather be safe than sorry.'"
Rather safe than sorry?.... I can see that. That's why you send someone out to take a two minute look-see. Having an officer stare at the plastic bird for two hours, and then calling in Fire/Rescue? - That's just retarded.

I know their police aren't allowed to have guns, but what about binoculars?
Tell me about it! I'm not above making stupid mistakes (trust me), but this was ridiculous :)
