H/T to Every Day, No Days Off Gunblog (which is an awesome blog for so many reasons) for linking to the Boston Globe's The Big Picture photography blog. I wouldn't have found it otherwise and now I'm hooked.
Among other topics, they do a monthly spread on the war in Afghanistan that is truly outstanding. Amazing pictures of the struggles going on there.
The series on Haiti is also very moving - for lots of reasons. If you ever want to see in stark relief what you can expect from human behavior in this country after a natural or man made disaster significant enough to disrupt the rule of law and crumble society... its right there for you to see.
I'm always amazed at the number of people in this country who think that exactly the same thing couldn't happen here under similar conditions - even after Katrina. Surely we're too civilized as a nation for our people to turn dog-eat-dog in such a short period of time....
Don't delude yourself.
Its also telling to see how difficult it is for the combine might and force of the US and its Allies to help get a small island like Haiti up and running again after its fall. Imagine for a moment just how exponentially more difficult it would be if it were the United States in widescale distress instead, with no equivalent big brother guardian there to help us out.
Prepare. Or, stick your head in the sand and cross your fingers.
