With all due respect to Basil Rathbone, Tony Stark Robert Downey Jr., or any of the others - -
Jeremy Brett was clearly the best Sherlock Holmes EVER.
The piercing stare, the manic slightly tipping out of control obsession, the borderline sociopathic disconnect with the rest of mankind, the genius intellect... Brett nails it with a style that makes the others look stiff by comparison.

I have to agree with you there, Paladin. The three seasons of the show are still the best adaptations of the Conan Doyle stories. It will be quite a while before anyone tops them, although the BBC's recent updating, SHERLOCK comes close.
And, though I did enjoy the recent theatrical release, SHERLOCK kicks the shit out of Robert Downy Jr. and Guy Ritchie.
I have to agree. If you check the Wikipedia entry on Brett, you find that the role very likely drove him mad. He also gained weight (due to meds) in the later stories, and by the time the series ended could have played a credible Mycroft instead of Sherlock.
