"You know more stuff that don't make you money than anybody I know."
- Robert B. Parker - Mortal Stakes. The enigmatic Hawk talking to Spenser.
I love Robert B. Parker's Spenser novels.
I wanted to be Spenser when I was a kid after seeing the TV adaptation of the book series. Robert Urich living in a converted Firehouse, driving around Boston in a Mustang Fastback, fighting crime and solving mysteries with the beautiful Susan Silverman and mysteriously dangerous Hawk never far away. Good stuff, that.
Over the past year, I've read every single book in the long series and discovered that I still want to be Spenser. Parker pumped out a new Spenser book regularly from the early 1970's until his death in 2010. There's 40 some-odd Spenser books, and I loved them all. There's supposed to be a final Spenser book released this May, but I've only heard rumors about it.
I also liked the Jesse Stone novels, and the Cole and Hitch (westerns) series - but they don't compare with the characters and plots in the Spenser books, in my opinion.
I especially like the quote above, since I've had similar sentiments expressed by people in regards to myself on more than one occasion.

Since I'm a native Floridian, my allegiance is given to Travis McGee, but Spenser isn't far behind.
The TV series left me cold but I love Parker's prose. His Spencer novels are the best but I like 'em all. Even the Sunny Randall books.
Bob - That sounds like a book series that I would enjoy.. I'll make a note of the series and give them a spin when I buy my next batch of books. I've become sort of a voracious reader and I'm always looking for new books.
M.D. - I think it didn't hurt that I saw the Spenser TV series when I was in my very early 20's... I enjoyed it much then, but I might find it less enjoyable were I to watch it now. I find that occurs quite often when I revisit TV shows via reruns that I enjoyed in my youth.
I loved Spenser for Hire. In University we knew a model who worked at our local pizzaria and her name was Kathy Spenser. She never got the joke but it was fun to ask her if she was for hire. Then after many years Hawk went on to kick ass on Spacestation Deep Space Nine and became emissary to the prophets of Bajour and my favorite Starfleet Captain of them all.
