Then and Now

The Cotton Exchange Building, New Orleans, LA. Built in 1871, and appearing in the photo circa 1900.

And the Cotton Exchange Building Hotel, as seen in modern day:

Same location, different building now. I like the idea of turning it into a hotel, but it certainly would have been a more beautiful and interesting place to stay before they "Blah'd" it down to look like every other modern building.

it doesn't look like the original at all, and that's a shame.

The sad thing is that it most likely cost $50,000 to build in the way back but today, just to update it for this years code changes will be that much. And that building will be there forever, the way they built them in the way back.

yep, that was definitely a downgrade.
the economics of restoration and historical preservation are obscene though.
It is just a sad fact of life.
When that building was originally constructed, those fifty thousand dollars bought a lot more.
jeez, I remember thirty-nine cent gas when I was a wee lad. It was fifty cents when I started driving at 16.
We need to go back to the gold standard.

Absolutely... just fitting her out for A/C would have been an expensive chore and probably cost prohibitive. Still miss the beautiful style, though.
