Nothing spectacular this year for Bag Day, but I filled an important niche on my gun list that's needed filling for a while. When my Daughter moved out on her own, our Marlin 60 went with her. That left us with only one gun chambered in .22 - the little Heritage Rough Rider single action pistol.
That just won't do. A .22 rifle is important to have, not only because it is a fun, inexpensive way to scratch your shooting itch and work on your long gun technique, but also because it's a great general purpose small game weapon. I thought about replacing the Marlin 60 with an identical one... but our local Cabela's had a sale on a synthetic stocked Ruger 10/22 that I just couldn't pass up.
I like it, a lot. I don't think I'll go for the long extended magazines, though I'll probably pick up some additional factory 10 round rotary mags.

Fun thing about the 10/22 is that there are so many accessories for it. I have no desire myself to turn one into a quasi-AR, but I've been eyeing a replacement stock that turns the 10/22 into a replica M1 Carbine. Sportsman's Guide sells them for around $100.
I don't suppose it was the Takedown, was it? The one that splits in half just forward of the action?
Bob - Yeah, I've even seen kits where you could transform your Ruger into a scaled down MG42 :) I'm not going to do anything to this one beside maybe a peepsight and a sling - but I might get another one to "play with" one day.
Tango - Nope. I've read good reviews about the TD model, but even if I could get it a little below MSRP online it's still outside my pricepoint for the moment.
Just so you know... If you do decide to invest in a larger capacity magazine, you should only buy the 30-round clip (Model BX-25) made by Ruger. All others (trust me, I've tried many of them) are plastic junk, and will jam often. The best deal I was able to find on the Ruger clips was at Midway.com. You should know that I do not work for Ruger or Midway.com; I'm just a big Ruger fan.
