We've had an ongoing issue with Gunny that I hope to finally resolve soon. Apparently he's got allergies. We've pretty much eliminated food related allergies from the equation and it looks like its going to be something (or somethings) in the environment either inside or outside the house. That's pretty vague, isn't it?
He's going in to a specialist Vet here in a couple of weeks for allergy testing so they can develop a recipe for shots that will hopefully take care of the problem. Allergies in dogs usually don't express themselves like human allergies - with sneezing, etc. Like lots of dogs, Gunny expresses his allergic reactions by scratching and licking himself.
A Lot.
Poor Guy has it so bad that even 300mg per day of benedryl didn't curb it much. We had to put him on low dose Prednisone (steroid) alternated with Temaril P (steroid + antihistamine) to keep him from scratching himself crazy. Those two meds really helped with the scratching, but long term steroid use in dogs can cause lots of health problems later on. That's why we're taking the next step and getting him tested.
Anyway... he's off the meds completely for the next couple of weeks in prep for the trip to the specialist. If he can get through that without scratching himself to pieces, or driving me nuts, then hopefully this will lead to a permanent solution to the problem.

Awe, poor Gunny!! Let's hope he isn't allergic to people (yes, that's a thing!).
Just an FYI - since you blog was marked as adult content I can't look at it at work. I should likely work during work anyway ;) but that will result in a few less visits, so sorry if I bulk -comment!
