Lost Opportunity

Read an article in the news this week:

"About 200 million years ago, a leech released a slimy mucous cocoon that unwittingly encased and trapped a bizarre animal with a springy tail, preserving it until researchers discovered the teardrop-shaped creature in Antarctica recently."

Interesting... but not what caught my eye. The money shot is this:

"This bell animal lived during the Late Triassic Period, when the Earth was much warmer, with dense rain forests flourishing along what is today the Transantarctic Mountain Range where it was found."

WHAT?.... You mean the earth was once much, much warmer than it is now? So warm, in fact, that dense tropical rain forests once grew in this frozen wasteland?

In case you are science challenged.... there weren't any cars, fossil fuels, or farting dairy cows in the Triassic Period. If only we had been around to halt manmade global warming way back then, perhaps we could have saved the planet from sure destruction.

You should forward this to Al Gore...

Now you don't believe in global warming? If I had a gun I would shoot myself out of frustration.

I am working very hard these days to STOP GLOBAL COOLING. It's the job of everyone on the planet to save our home from turning into a giant block of ice the way it did 15,000 years ago during the last Ice Age.

Kal - It's not a matter of "believing". One "believes" in Santa Clause. One "believes" in the Easter Bunny.

Global Warming is either occuring, or it is not. Growing evidence shows that it is not - or at least not at the rate initially claimed by scientists. A separate issue is whether or not this warming is caused by people. The scientific fact that the earth has warmed and cooled over and over long before mankind even existed simply shows that global warming and cooling may not have anything whatsoever to do with anything mankind is doing.

Man drives cars. You think the earth is warming - therefore the cars must be making it hot. By that logic, the fact that I get up every morning before sunrise must mean that I control the rising of the sun.

LL - I'm eating extra beans to maximize my methane output. We all have to support the cause!

And you're fertilizing the planet and renewing the life of plants at the same time. How novel!!!

To be fair, Antarctica wasn't in the same spot. But it doesn't invalidate your point, as the climate was warmer overall.

Evan - Very true... the continents were all pretty much rubbing shoulders in those days. You're also right about it not changing the overall conclusion. Even if Antarctica had been where it is now, it wouldn't have mattered. There weren't any polar ice caps at either end of the globe during the Triassic.
