Important Point to Remember

In the aftermath of the terrible Ohio School shooting, School Superintendent Joseph Bergant apparently has everything under control now:

“I want to assure parents, I want to assure our faculty, and most importantly, our students, that you will be safe when re-entering our program.”

That's a lie.

Its a well meaning lie, I'm sure, but a dangerous lie none the less. As much as you would like to, Mr. Bergant, you can't assure any of those people that they will be safe. As much as those people might crave that assurance, it's not true.

Is life. Is not safe.

No politician, administrator, or well meaning official of any sort can "assure" you that through some program, law, or other action you and yours will be kept safe. Its just a cold hard fact of life. There are things you can do to make yourself safer. There are things the government and schools can do to increase the safety of your environment.

However, blind faith in any assurance of absolute safety will eventually dissapoint you every. single. time.

That's important to remember. Even during a time of grief when you're looking for comfort. Sometimes, especially then.

Girl Friday - 2/24/2012 - Kelly Stables

This week's Girl Friday is under 5 feet tall, and packs a ton of appeal into that small package. If you'd asked me if I'd eventually feel this way after seeing her on screen the first time - I'd have said no.....

Crazy, but specific.

I have to deal with crazy animal rights people on a regular basis in my job. The Crazy just usually doesn't rise to this level (although it may be lurking under the surface):

An Ohio woman who compared animal-welfare work to the liberation of World War II concentration camps has been charged with soliciting a hit man to fatally shoot or slit the throat of a random fur-wearer, federal authorities said.

And she was pretty specific, too...

The affidavit says an FBI employee posing as a possible hit man later began email correspondence with Lowell, and she offered him $730 in jewelry or cash for the killing of a victim of at least 12 years but "preferably 14 years old or older" outside a library near a playground in her hometown.

"You need to bring a gun that has a silencer on it and that can be easily concealed in your pants pocket or coat. ... If you do not want to risk the possibility of getting caught with a gun before the job, bring a sharp knife that is (at least) 4 inches long, it should be sharp enough to stab someone and/or slit their throat to kill them. I want the person to be dead in less than 2 minutes," says an email reprinted in the affidavit.

Reprinted emails also say Lowell wrote that she sees nothing wrong with "liberating" animals from fur factory farms and laboratories since "soldiers liberated people from Nazi camps in World War 2."

Girl Friday - 2/17/2012 - Bethanie Badertscher - NSFW

I saw this week's Girl Friday for the first time when February's Blue Press, the catalog for Dillon Precision Products, arrived in the mail. The catalog features Dillon's reloading equipment as well as other gun related products. The Cover of each issue also features a usually interesting "Girl and Gun" composition.

The February issue isn't available online yet, so I don't have the cover art in question. Luckily, there are plenty of other pictures available of this months cover model -

Coyote noodling

Lots of coyote activity this year, and 3 or 4 are the mangy/sick variety that we get calls on several times a day in different parts of town. Usually nothing we can do about it. It would be an easy task to snipe them.... but discharge of a firearm within the city limits by the dogcatcher is frowned upon by the Powers-that-be for some reason :)

As it is, we are normally left with the options of trying to trap them in live traps - which almost never works - or by hand with a catchpole or net - which almost never works. They are too fast and too good at keeping multiple escape avenues constantly available.

I finally managed to catch this one Sunday. It tried to slink away as I walked up on it, but made a tactical error when it attempted to squeeze through the slats of an iron fence instead of going under and got slowed down enough for me to close the gap and grab its tail with my hands..... things got interesting after that, but everyting came out OK.

For me, anyway. Scratch one Tango.

Hey, Kettle!

Proving further that, just because you're famous, it doesn't mean you are to be admired......

“I voted for Barack because he was black. ’Cuz that’s why other folks vote for other people — because they look like them,” Jackson said. "That’s American politics, pure and simple. [Obama’s] message didn’t mean sh-t to me. In the end, he’s a politician. I just hoped he would do some of what he said he was gonna do."

That's Samuel L. Jackson, in the new issue of Ebony Magazine. So what does he think about the Tea Party?

“It’s pretty obvious what they are,” Jackson said in an interview with New York Magazine. “The division of the country is not about the government having too much power. I think everything right now is geared toward getting that guy out of office, whatever that means.”

Jackson continued, “It’s not politics. It is not economics. It all boils down to pretty much to race. It is a shame.”

Idiot. When you're a raging racist, it colors everything you experience.

Doritos commercial controversy?

I didn't give a flip about the Superbowl this year. Mrs. Paladin recorded it on the DVR, though, so we could fast forward through it and watch the commercials after it was over. Most of them were pretty bland, IMO. I liked a couple of them though. The Hyundai cheetah one and the E-trade baby speed dating were funny.

There were also a couple of commercials for Doritos Chips which are made by Frito Lay. Frito Lay has it's corporate headquarters near us and we have a friend who works there. She told us something kind of interesting about response to the commercials they ran this year.

This one was my favorite Doritos ad:

Doritos also ran this one, which didn't do anything for me:

Seems Frito Lay has received a barrage of complaints regarding one of the commercials above, and virtual no complaints about the other one. Do you think people called in and complained about Grandma shooting a baby like a giant slingshot?.... No.

They complained about the other commercial because it "made light of, and encouraged, the killing of cats."

Further evidence that the movie "Idiocracy" may actually foretell an acurate future.
